Welcome to this smorgasbord of Delia Derbyshire Day 2023 broadcasts!

With thanks to those who gave us a platform and helped to amplify the love and respect for the late great Delia Derbyshire as a key figure in the development of electronic music in the UK, at least.

First up is a 2 hour show on Reform Radio, who have been supporting DD Day since our first event 10 years ago.

DD Day instigator and project manager Caro C chats with Jamie Groovement followed by a megamix of previous DD Day new music commissions as we celebrate our 10th year. Then two of our brilliant DD Day 2023 volunteers Daisy Courtnauld and Will Steele present an hour of Delia and Doctor Who music and chat. They also present sound bites from other activities we have carried out this year including kids talking about and playing wobbulators, oral histories with members of the original Doctor Who team and playing new music created by emerging artists for Delia Derbyshire Day 2023, inspired by Delia’s archive.

In the second hour, Agent J re-presents interviews he conducted at our first DD Day event in 2013 with Mark Ayres (Doctor Who composer, our DD Estate main contact and DD Day trustee), Naomi Kashiwagi (artist and DD Day 2013 team) and Waris Hussein (director of first Doctor Who episodes in 1963).

Next up is a playlist we were invited to produce for the Freakzone show on BBC 6Music.

Featuring music from Delia herself, her BBC Radiophonic Workshop colleagues, Doctor Who composers and sound designers and new music from our current Delia Derbyshire Day artists Joy Ingle and Joel Foster. There are also a few sound bites in there from Delia thanks to John Cavanagh as well as the original Doctor Who team we collected oral histories with this year.

And finally, Sound On Sound magazine invited us to produce a DD Day archive special podcast to coincide with Delia Derbyshire Day 2023.

Here we delve into the DD Archive, its audio and paper items as well as reflections on its value and Delia’s work and working methods. With DD experts and DD Day trustees Mark Ayres and David Butler plus Cosey Fanni Tutti who has worked with Delia’s archive for her book “Re-sisters” and as composer on Caroline Catz’s film “Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes.”
