6 North West England artists producing 3 new audio-visual works

We are excited to offer 6 artists commissions this year as part of our Delia Derbyshire Day 2025 10th anniversary heritage project. Supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, we invited our pool of 15 North West England based artists to propose new work inspired by Delia’s Archive, the Delia Derbyshire Day Archive and a make a statement about our times.

These will be 3 x new electronic music/audio collage and visual art works to be presented online on DD Day 2025 – 23 November. The news works will be presented at a live in-person event in Manchester on DD Day eve, 22 November, which is currently being planning by our volunteer team, more on that in due course. A further presentation/performance opportunity will be with Full of Noises in Cumbria on 29 November. Also look out for radio shows which will showcase these artists new work which will help communicate the heritage our work is centred around.

Introducing our DD Day 2025 artists

Commission 1: ‘Glimmers’ by Zolatec & hippiezilla

ZOLATEC is a Manchesterbased music producer and independent artist. Drawing from trip hop, breakcore and witch house, her production style has evolved into a diasporic fusion of breakbeats, shoegaze textures and experimental sound design, anchored by ethereal vocals and live steelpan.

“I’m so excited to collaborate with hippiezilla on ‘Glimmers’. Bringing our worlds of sound and visuals together to create something captivating, playful and full of hope feels truly special. I can’t wait to share this joint audiovisual experience with everyone and see how my music and her visuals interact live.”

Corina Bibere aka hippiezilla is a Romanian Manchester based selftaught visual artist & VJ. Resident visual artist for Brume, long time Test Card and Space Cassette collaborator, hippiezilla focuses on trippy colourful anime and nature inspired live visuals.

Glimmers‘ will be a audio-visual performance portraying the resilience required to create change in the current difficult times. Inspired by Delia’s playful spirit and inventive approach to sound, ‘Glimmers‘ aims to serve as a gentle reminder that joy is an act of resistance and hope remains present in this often seemingly hopeless world.”

Commission 2: ‘The Music of Uncertain Lives’ by Suzy Mangion

Suzy Mangion is a Manchester-based maker of music, film, and sound art, who also writes about sound. Suzy’s commission for Delia Derbyshire Day 2025 will be an audio work called ‘The Music of Uncertain Lives.’ Andrea Pazos will provide visual support for Suzy’s proposal.

“I’m excited about this new commission for Delia Derbyshire Day 2025. In contrast to the methodical way in which I previously explored the archive in 2021, this time I’m going to dive in via random number generation and see where I land. It’s an approach I hope might have appealed to the unorthodox and mathematics-loving Delia herself.”

Commission 3: DD Day anniversary collage

by Joy Ingle and Alexis Maxwell

Joy Ingle is a composer and sound artist based in Manchester, interested in pulling together field recordings, oral histories and composed material to build unique sonic landscape. Joy wants to write a sound collage as an experiment in using sound and music as the primary artefact through which to experience the Delia Derbyshire Archive, its own legacy and the legacy of its namesake.

“I am really excited to be working with Delia Derbyshire Day again, especially on this project that celebrates all the work they have done over the last ten years and all of the amazing new art that has been created because of them. Delia’s work has meant a lot to me in my career and I hope that this project allows me to show how much she means to everyone else!”

Alexis makes work that celebrates the intersections of their identity – drawing from lived experience of queerness, mental illness and racial injustice. They use a blend of text, sound, projection and performance to explore how the digital and physical worlds can overlap.

“I’m excited to explore the legacy of Delia Derbyshire Day, and celebrate the many hands that have played a role in shaping and nurturing it over the last decade. Returning to the archives with Joy Ingle feels like the perfect opportunity to play with what that legacy means to us.”
