An update on our Big Give electronic music education initiative

Just a quick update as we are about halfway through our Electronic Music Education Needs Analysis. This very small scale yet pioneering study, explores the potential of and barriers to electronic music education at primary school level, focussing on Manchester at this stage.

With our data expert trustee, Maya, we designed surveys and consultation questions for teachers and children to provide us with useful data about the state of electronic music education now. We have now conducted the consultations with the teachers and children and look forward to moving on to the next stages.

Number of teachers we have consulted with

Number of schools we have covered in our consultations

Number of children we have carried out creative consultation with

Number of children to experience workshops in Autumn Term 2025

We made a word cloud with 60 kids, asking them:

What words come to mind when you think of Delia Derbyshire?

Our next steps are:

  • Our data analyst experts from Manchester City Council are currently crunching the data which will then be sent to fellow MCR arts organisation Brighter Sound who will produce an electronic music education needs analysis report that benefits schools nationally – to be published before DD Day 2025 (23 November);
  • We will be delivering teacher training sessions in the Autumn Term, both online and in-person via One Education Music;
  • Autumn term workshops: 6 whole class taster workshops with Year 5 pupils (180 children) with teaching staff present and involved so they all learn together.
  • We have been invited to present our findings at the Music Mark national conference in October.

Our electronic music education initiative 2025 has been kindly  supported by 80 donors via the Big Give, whose donations were matched by Big Give. This project is also supported by Postlethwaite Music Foundation and One Education Music.

Huge thanks to all who have made this happen.

We’ll be back with the full report in the Autumn…
